Regulations

Adopted on 30 September 2004 and entered into force on 1 January 2005, the Protocol was written to ensure proper equipment for security and boating safety.

The sailor will get its own adequate safety equipment depending on the type of navigation and the boat category. He is solely responsible for both, crew and boat security.

January 1st 2005

2 navigation zones were established :

- sailing <6 miles from harbour
- sailing >6 miles from harbour

As of 16 June 1998, 4 boats categories can be identified with the CE marking and the letters 1, B, C or D. The letters indicate the boat strength and resistance to winds and sea conditions.

There are 3 different boat categories :

– Closed boats (art.224.3)

By definition, closed boats feature hard or soft waterproof enclosure in accordance with EN ISO Norm 11212 (at least 1 person).

- Open boats differ from Closed boats, they don't have cabine and are the most common typers of powerboats. They offer little protection for crew or cargo (they can be "wet" rides in rough water or rainy weather)

- Recreational crafts are defined as :

  • Boats under 5 meters long, sailing boats and water-jet propulsion boats
  • Paddle boats : kayaks, canoes and similar craft
  • Jet boating : watercraft or jet boats
